Our History

Founded in 1992 as the Institute for Renewing Community Leadership, the Shannon Leadership Institute was created in response to a need that remains urgent today: community-serving leaders need more than skills. They need time and space to reflect, renew, and realign their leadership with the values and purpose that sustain meaningful service.

Under the leadership of James P. Shannon and founding director Ronnie Brooks, the Institute became a distinctive place of renewal for experienced leaders across sectors. In 2002, it joined the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation and was renamed in honor of Jim Shannon’s life, values, and commitment to community service. In 2021, Shannon became an independent nonprofit, continuing its mission to develop ethical, effective, and community-centered leaders.

For more than thirty years, Shannon has remained rooted in one enduring belief: when leaders are given the space to reconnect with purpose and values, communities are stronger for it.
